Since there may be up to 106 transistors on a chip, each transistor must have a simple representation in SPICE. The current/voltage characteristics of a single transistor are derived from the flow of electrons and holes, governed by non-linear partial differential equations, the so-called drift-diffusion equations (in the classical limit). Simple approximations were found suitable in early models, and as device sizes reduced these have been adapted empirically to fit data – so much so that now there can be as many as 400 fitting parameters needed. This is expensive – it requires lots of measurements and parameter extraction. We have been re-visiting the physics, obtaining better approximations. After a brief introduction to the physics of semi-conductors, I shall describe an approach to the basic equations using asymptotic analysis that, for some transistor characteristics including the current/voltage relationship, yields accurate formulae needing much fewer parameters. In particular work done for our industrial sponsor has involved modeling the dependence of junction capacitance on voltage. Also I shall describe enhanced equations that have been introduced to model quantum effects that are present in the ultra-small devices. Mathematically, these are called slow passage or ramp problems . Of particular interest is when a parameter passes slowly through a Hopf bifurcation and the system's response changes from a slowly varying steady state to slowly varying oscillations. The interesting phenomena is that the transition may not occur until the parameter is considerably beyond the value predicted from a static bifurcation analysis, no matter how slow the parameter is varied, and the delay in onset is dependent on the initial state of the system (memory effect). Previous studies have focussed on linear or constant speed ramps [Baer, Erneux & Rinzel (1988,1989), Su (1991)]. In this talk I will introduce the problem of slow accelerating and de-accelerating ramps, obtain new results using numerical and asymptotic methods, and apply the results to problems in nerve membrane accommodation and neuronal bursting. Sciences CGU/SDSU Abstract: Introduction Solar salterns are natural or man-made structures composed of several conjoined pools with progressively increasing concentrations of salt, used to extract several mineral salts from water. The biota of the pools changes as salinity rises, starting with close similarity to a marine microbial community and progressively becoming a halophilic ecosystem. The community goes from being Bacteria-dominated to be a halophilic-Archaeal community with lower diversity but higher population density. In this environment, taking advantage of many environmental changes in a small area, microbial and viral populations are studied. Methods employed include wet-lab methods for DNA extraction and population quantification and identification and a plethora of bioinformatics methods, many of them developed for this project. Models and techniques to identify and compare community structure for both the microbial and viral metagenomic samples are discussed, as well as procedures to profile and compare community metabolism. The main feature of this method is its ability to perform interface calculation and account for conditions relating solution properties across phase interface using a finite difference / volume-fraction-based front-capturing hybrid technique. The approach begins by considering the computational domain as physically separated phases. A finite difference method with a Cartesian grid is employed on the whole domain while modifications are applied to correct boundary conditions at the interfaces. The volume-fraction-based front-capturing algorithm is used to capture each interface in terms of the volume fraction in each cell. The major aspect of this method is its implementation simplicity, which results in code generation that can be highly optimized. To highlight this method, an application is presented for simulation and investigation of enzyme reactions within a sessile hydrogel drop, where the Michaelis-Menten kinetics is used to model the reaction mechanism.
